“The More You Give, The More You Get”

Yayy – Finally, Thursday is here! While most of the people have this ‘Yayy!’ feeling on Fridays but for me, Thursday is that day. Every Thursday, we get to be a part of the insightful conversations with global leaders which guide us in becoming the better versions of ourselves. But you might be thinking what is so special about these conversations. Why am I so intrigued to write a blog about it? Where else would you get a platform to ask questions to the pioneers of the automotive industry and how their humble beginnings have been the foundation of their success. Let me give you a glimpse of one such experience in this blog today.

The conversation started with Mr. Anil Sachdev (Founder and Chairman, SOIL) taking Mr. Sunil Kant Munjal (Chairman, Hero Enterprise) back to memory lane and asking him about his happiest moment in life. Mr. Munjal then described his journey when he was writing his book ‘The Making of Hero’ and you could see the delight on his face. When he revisited and recollected data for his book, he described the entire process of research like being in an amusement park and we surely could relate to that feeling. Mr. Munjal followed this by describing how ‘creating new things’ & the ‘ability to give’ gave him some of the happiest moments of his life. He also added, “You don’t need a special occasion to be happy” which resonated with me strongly.

Mr. Munjal mentioned how while growing up and listening to his father’s partition experiences; being cautious, careful, and building relationships came as a natural learning to him. He shared how his father encouraged him when he got an opportunity to be a part of the diplomacy track between India and Pakistan. Remembering these times, he realized how valuable these learnings were.

Pioneering intellectual capital in his company is one of the many credits to Mr. Munjal. Diversifying from manufacturing to starting many educational institutes, he always believed that providing tools to inculcate knowledge and skills is the best way to serve the people and the nation. He always envisioned that to reduce pay disparity, the best tool is proper education.

Mr. Munjal described to us that his journey had led him to discover his inquisitiveness towards finding and learning new things. The joy of bringing in new ideas, technologies, and businesses helped him pilot the Hero Corporate Services as an internal consultancy for the organization. A place where you can go with any problem at hand.

    COVID-19: The Storm

While the world is still coming to terms with the impact of COVID-19, Mr. Munjal described this situation as a black swan event. He emphasized that supporting people in and around your organization during these times is paramount. He further added that an alliance was formed between auto-component and medical device companies, working alongside the government to better organize themselves, improve capacities of ICUs, and support initiatives that made ventilators. Their factories’ canteens were also out serving meals to many displaced people.

Apart from all these activities, Mr. Munjal knew that a lot of misinformation was also plaguing the society. He felt the need for good quality discussions and real information on which the decisions can be based on and worked alongside their think tank Hero Mindmine for this initiative. Furthermore, they worked apace with the Delhi government in setting up an office with EY to gather and analyze information. They worked on what could be the appropriate financial support package.

He thoroughly believes that this time can be best used for ideation and how to build more robust business models. Absorb more technology and create a ‘Zero-Based Design, Budget and Cost’. He views this time as the best time to upskill ourselves, tap into our passions, and reconnect with family.

Towards the end of the conversation, Mr. Munjal answered the questions with his signature smile and discussed that clean energy for transportation is a real issue with no solid answers yet. Shifting to electric cars will just push the pollution blames elsewhere so there is a need for collective thinking & a full systems approach. Then he also spoke about the empowerment of blue-collared workers which would require huge societal and regulatory change. He further added that bringing gender diversity at this level will help India tap its full potential.

Mr. Munjal concluded by talking about how he celebrates failure and success equally at their townhall gatherings and promotes curiosity among his teams – he said that this is what helps his employees shine. In the end, he stressed that losing and winning are phases, the ones who are grounded and have a balanced head lead the way.

This whole conversation brought about hope in me. I learned about the qualities I should inculcate as a professional. The power of happiness, giving, and building relationships is the real wealth and helps us in our journey ahead.
