    When it comes to choosing an MBA college, there are several factors that we consider. Often times it is about:

    1. Class structure
    2. Network of faculty
    3. Placement record and alumni network of the college

    The non-conventional factor to choose your MBA college

    However, rarely does one consider the philosophy and vision statement of the college. And why is it important?

    This is because an MBA program is not just about gaining the technical skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the business world, its also about developing one’s character and ethics. After all, many successful business leaders are known for not just their competence, but also for their strong work ethics and character.

    One MBA program that stood out in this regard for me is the SOIL Institute of Management. SOIL’s vision is to “build leaders with character, competence, and enthusiasm.” This means that the program is not just focused on helping students acquire the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the business world, but is also on helping them develop their character and inherent values, as well as their sense of purpose. This is achieved through a unique and holistic approach that includes “awareness” of one’s gifts and purpose, as well as the creation of an “individual development plan” that helps students leverage their strengths.

    Having a business leader with strong values is important because it helps to create a positive company culture and can lead to better decision making. Strong values can guide a leader in making ethical choices that align with the company’s mission and goals, and can also help to inspire and motivate employees. Additionally, a leader with strong values can be a positive role model for employees and can help to build trust and credibility with customers and stakeholders. Overall, a leader with strong values can help to create a sustainable and successful business.

    One example of a business leader in India who is known for his character and competence is Anand Mahindra, Chairman and Managing Director of Mahindra Group. He is known for his strong ethical values and leadership skills, which have helped him grow Mahindra Group into a global conglomerate. Under his leadership, the company has won numerous awards for corporate social responsibility and sustainable business practices. He is also known for his active involvement in various philanthropic initiatives and his commitment to promoting education and skill development in India. Some of the ways that his strong character makes him a better leader include:

    • Visionary leadership: Anand Mahindra is known for his ability to think strategically and to have a long-term vision for the company. He has been instrumental in shaping Mahindra Group into a diversified conglomerate and has led the company’s global expansion.
    • Strong values: Anand Mahindra is known for his commitment to ethical and sustainable business practices.     At SOIL, we believe that being ethical is about being fair to all stakeholders, using the right means to achieve results and “no deception”. The focus is on teaching strong ethics by incorporating ethical principles and decision-making frameworks into our curriculum. This can be done in a number of ways, such as ethics in the classroom, case studies, guest speakers, role playing & simulations and most uniquely every process in SOIL where we teach students to explore this within themselves through a week-long intense course conducted by theatre artists.
