The Journey from Engineering to an MBA

According to Google, the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures. An engineer is a person who uses scientific knowledge to design, construct, and maintain engines and machines or structures such as roads, railways, and bridges. According to the general trend, particularly in India, engineers are problem solvers; they can fix any issue and believe that they can achieve any goal they set for themselves.

Engineering is a creative skill of applying science to the world around us, and this stream is exclusively for those like me, who are passionate about improving the world via innovative ideas. Looking at the journey to become an engineer in India, from my perspective as a student: Many of us, my peers, chose engineering as a major in 11th grade, based on market trends or personal interests. After completing Engineering, I have seen several engineers pursue an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degree.

The average engineering student studies 40 subjects in four years, the majority of which include mathematical and application-based problem solving, preparing us to be problem solvers. However, only a few students are fortunate enough to be placed in core engineering areas, while the rest of students either continue their studies or find work in a mainstream business that accepts the bulk of engineering students based on the market or conditions at the time. The majority of students with sufficient financial resources study for a master’s degree abroad, while others pursue further education in India. A small percentage of these students enter the workforce, while some prepare for government professions, such as becoming IAS/ IPS/ IES officers, and the others continue working toward their goals. Talented engineers swiftly rise in engineering professions early in their careers. They must, however, be more than merely talented engineers in order to rise to management or senior management. To become strategic leaders in their organisations, they need greater business knowledge and abilities.

An MBA now steps in to save the day. And that is why most of us choose this path as the most logical. My MBA is helping us broaden my business knowledge, helping us to make more informed strategic business decisions and see all of the consequences. We must be able to communicate well with others. For a senior leadership position, a full understanding of the company’s operations, from marketing to sales to finance and supply chain, is required.

If a leader wants to lead a high-performing team, they must have strategic decision-making, negotiating, and persuading skills. Communication, both verbal and written, teamwork, problem-solving, and analytical abilities are all required. You must be effective across all functions in order to be successful. Leaders must be able to collaborate effectively with people who hold opposing opinions.

And that’s how an engineer turns into a great leader.
