SOIL PREPARED ME TO LEAD A COMPANY FROM DAY ONE

When I moved out of my last organization, I had a dream to learn the essence of management and its application in the world. SOIL Institute of Management helped me in not one but several avenues to enhance my skills and bring unprecedented level of success to the table.

So, let me give you an example, the first day at SOIL, we got five projects to be submitted in a timeline of just two days and these projects were assigned by non-other than our CMS team – Career Management Services. I loved the SOIL classroom experience, but I recall initially doubting the power of the case method style of learning. They felt undoubtedly hard but I was ready to take on the challenge. White papers, presentation and simulations, these were new to me on my first day. Bubbling and drowning with pressure I decide to take up the challenge and complete all these way before deadlines.

A key thing I have noticed in SOIL Alumni, is that as their careers progress, they feel even more strongly about the importance of their SOIL education. I believe this is due to SOIL’s key philosophy that focusses on leadership and which pays dividends as we go from individual contributors to leaders over time. Making decisions in uncertain circumstances, contemplating the impact of our judgement on others, and listening to individuals in our organisation to approximate the best way have all been taught to me early on by our faculty.

SOIL class composition exposes us to a variety of perspectives. SOIL stands out because it attracts students from all around the world at a stage in their lives when they have had a variety of experiences but are still curious. Work pressure, team work and leadership qualities are inculcated into us way before the course even starts. We are encouraged to sit back, relax and enjoy the learning process. The fact that people agree and disagree in unexpected ways is maybe the most enjoyable surprise you will discover at SOIL.

By exposing us to such multidimensional diversity, we begin to notice how often we differ from people who appear to be the most similar – and how much we share with those who appear to be the most dissimilar. Discovering this is very humanising. We value multiple community identities, but also learn to recognise people as individuals in an age where we are urged to reduce individuals to group identity.

When we spend the entire one year or two years with the same individuals, the SOIL classroom produces a virtuous flywheel: the closer I and my classmates grew, the braver I felt to speak out; and the more that I spoke up, the closer I felt to my peers and to potential success.

In SOIL, I learned from individuals who are closest to the action by listening to colleagues from many perspectives, developing genuine relationships, and reaching consensus. These are eternal skills required to lead any firm. They prepared me for shifting economic and technological conditions.

SOIL has strong reason to continue with its tested pedagogy, with outstanding faculty like Prof. A.N Bhattacharya from Marketing, Prof. Susie Roy who teaches Yoga and Wellness, and Dr. Neekita Batra from Finance. Lean into the experience both inside and outside of the classroom, and you’ll discover that the happiest year of your life may also be the most beneficial.

I completed, presented, whitepapers, presentations and did so much more. These was only possible because SOIL taught us the way to handle corporate life, its many challenges and how to take on early leadership responsibilities. SOIL got me ready to lead an organisation or a department from day one.
