SOIL Asks its students: What is more important – purpose or profits?

In recent years, there has been a growing debate about the role of businesses in society. While many argue that the primary goal of a business is to maximize profits, others believe that companies should prioritize social and environmental concerns. This debate was recently brought to the forefront when this question was asked in one of SOIL’s classrooms, “What’s more important – purpose or profits?”

The question reflects the changing priorities of businesses, as more and more companies are recognizing the importance of social responsibility. In the past, businesses were primarily focused on maximizing profits, with little regard for their impact on society. However, in recent years, this has changed as consumers and investors have become more concerned about issues such as climate change, income inequality, and social justice.

This question reflects the fact that many students are entering business school with a desire to make a positive impact on the world. These students are looking for ways to use their business skills to address social and environmental challenges, rather than simply pursuing careers in finance or consulting.

At the same time, there are still many students who believe that the primary goal of a business is to make money. They believe that businesses have a responsibility to their shareholders to maximize profits, and that any focus on social or environmental concerns should be secondary.

So, what is the answer to the question – purpose or profits? The truth is that there is no easy answer.

Both purpose and profits are important, and businesses need to find a balance between the two.

On the one hand, businesses that are solely focused on profits may engage in practices that are harmful to society and the environment. For example, a company that cuts corners on safety or environmental regulations to increase profits may ultimately harm its workers and the communities in which it operates. Similarly, a company that engages in unethical practices to increase profits may harm its reputation and lose customers in the long run.

On the other hand, businesses that are solely focused on purpose may struggle to survive in a competitive market. Without profits, a business cannot invest in research and development, hire new employees, or expand into new markets. In the long run, this may limit the company’s ability to make a positive impact on society.

The challenge for businesses, therefore, is to find a way to balance purpose and profits. This means finding ways to make a positive impact on society while also generating profits for shareholders. This may involve investing in sustainable practices, developing new products and services that address social and environmental challenges, and engaging with stakeholders to understand their concerns and priorities.

Ultimately, this debate reflects a growing awareness that businesses have a role to play in addressing social and environmental challenges. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, businesses will need to find ways to balance their financial goals with their responsibilities to society and the environment. By doing so, they can not only make a positive impact on the world but also create long-term value for their shareholders.
