Social Innovation Program – My Experience

In today’s world, business is geared towards the development of society. Many organizations are participating in social projects in greater numbers than ever before. It’s not just a part of their CSR activity, but it is also about giving back to the society, it is about how can we improve and bring a difference in each other’s life.

SOIL is one of those institutes which acts as a platform that aims at bringing about a transformation in the lives of the people. It not only prepares its students theoretically, but also gives a practical exposure to understand the pain points of the society through its Social Innovation Program – a part of the curriculum which allows all its students to experience and work with various NGOs. This exposure not only serves the society but also allows the students to discover their leadership and innovative skills through a noble cause.

Some of the organizations that SOIL is associated with are – Udayan Care, Aawaaz Foundation, She for Change, Navjyoti Indian foundation, Muskaan dreams, Can Support, National Thalassemia Welfare Society and many more. Every Wednesday, we, the students focus on our SIP projects and create detailed plans to enhance their marketing, financial, analytical and people skills to bring a transformation not only to their career, but also to the people who are directly or indirectly associated with these projects.

My personal experience with Udayan Care has been really great where I have been looking after two projects. Although it has just been 4 weeks since we started, but I have learnt a lot about the CSR activities which various organisations do to bring a transformational journey in the lives of its people. Research is one of the key ingredients in every domain and I can understand how our analytics functionalities can help us dig out deep insights through such data. Creating a mentorship plan is another domain on which I am working where I am able to use my people skills and understanding to build a relationship between the mentor and the mentee.

This Social Innovation Program focuses on the social sector and social inclusion in order to ensure that each of its student grows into a caring leader. Understanding the reality of the development sector is critical for any business leader. Human progress is dependent on the society and therefore the Social Innovation Program has been integrated into the SOIL curriculum as a key course. Student teams usually collaborate with organisations dedicated to making the world a better place.

Working for a non-profit organisation extends one’s horizon. It creates an impact on how one has to go about achieving one’s goals and making decisions. Also, in an NGO, we get to work with people of various cultures, social strata and celebrate diversity, gaining knowledge and experiential learning. It helps us adjust to a variety of cultural demands and behavioural standards, which in turn helps all of us students to learn the art of dealing with any kind of difficult situations. SOIL not only prepares us to be better managers for tomorrow, but it also makes us ready to be better future leaders, filled with compassion and love.
