How can a One-Year MBA transform your HR career? Shishira’s Story

Shishira’s story is about transformation, ambition, and bold choices. She began her career in US operations, working as an executive account manager in technical recruitment. For three and a half years, she thrived in that fast-paced industry. She learned a lot, but over time, her ambitions grew beyond recruitment. She wanted more.

Recruitment gave her a solid start, but she longed to explore other areas within HR. She was curious about talent management, employee engagement, and organizational development. Shifting into these roles required new skills. She knew it was time for a change. That’s when the idea of pursuing an MBA came to her.

Unlike many of her peers, she didn’t want a two-year program. With significant corporate experience, she wanted something fast and focused. “Why spend two years when I can cut the basics and get back to the corporate world sooner?” she thought. A one-year MBA made perfect sense. She began researching programs and soon found SOIL Institute of Management.

SOIL stood out immediately. It wasn’t just about textbooks and lectures. The program emphasized real-world learning. Faculty came from the industry and shared real-life scenarios with students. The curriculum was practical, filled with case studies based on actual business situations. It was exactly what she wanted.

Shishira loved the fact that it wasn’t all theory. “The case studies were industry-related and gave us a practical approach.” Another factor was SOIL’s location in Gurgaon, a bustling corporate hub. For someone eager to return to work quickly, it seemed like the perfect place to be.

From day one, she knew the program would be intense. A one-year MBA leaves no room for delays. Every day counted. But Shishira embraced the challenge with an open mind and a willingness to push herself.

The curriculum was diverse and filled with new experiences. One of her favorite memories was a design-thinking trip to Sidhbari. Students applied creative problem-solving techniques in real-world scenarios. It wasn’t just an academic exercise; it changed how she approached problems.

The faculty played a key role in shaping her journey. Many were also professors at IIT Delhi and brought a wealth of experience to the classroom. Their insights made learning practical and exciting. “It’s not just about what you learn, but who teaches you” says Shishira. “The professors at SOIL made all the difference.”

But learning at SOIL wasn’t confined to classrooms. The institute encouraged students to participate in seminars, presentations, and cultural events. These activities built leadership and communication skills. Working in diverse teams taught her how to collaborate and solve problems together.

“It’s not just about leading a team,” she reflects. “It’s about learning to lead yourself. SOIL gave me that opportunity.” The support system at SOIL was another major strength. Mentors-both internal and external-guided her through the program. They helped her focus on roles that matched her skills and interests. With their advice, she identified areas where she needed to upskill and prepare for her dream roles.

Starting a New Position As Associate Manager

Her hard work paid off during campus placements. Maverick Systems, a company that caught her attention, offered her the role of HRBP Associate Manager. The position was exactly what she had aimed for. It allowed her to explore broader HR functions beyond recruitment. Her time at Maverick Systems was transformational. She applied everything she had learned at SOIL. The fast-paced environment pushed her to grow quickly. Every project brought new challenges. Working with diverse teams helped her sharpen her skills.

She didn’t do it alone. She often leaned on lessons from SOIL and advice from her mentors. “My mentors and peers helped me a lot,” she says. “They guided me on what roles to apply for and how to position myself better.“

Her advice for aspiring management students is simple. First, have clarity about what you want to do. MBA programs cover many subjects like finance, marketing, and statistics. It’s easy to get lost in the variety. Focus on your strengths and interest areas. That will help you get the most out of the experience.

Second, participate in everything. “Don’t miss any opportunity,” she says. “Seminars, cultural events, presentations-they all add value.” These experiences build confidence, improve communication, and teach essential leadership skills.

For those considering a one-year MBA, she offers practical advice. “It’s fast-paced. Be ready to work hard and adapt quickly,” she says. “Come with an open mind and make the most of every day.”

Looking back, she believes SOIL gave her much more than just academic knowledge. It provided a network of mentors, peers, and professors who helped her grow. It taught her how to think differently, adapt quickly, and lead herself with confidence.
