    Panel Discussion on the Implementation of the National Education Policy

    In an endeavour to understand the nuances of NEP, SOIL Institute of Management conducted a panel discussion on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) on 9th April 4:00 – 5.30 PM.

    Dr. Vidya Mahesh Iyer – Director, SOIL School of Business Design, Manesar introduced the esteemed panel members comprising of:

    • Ranjan Banerjee – Dean and Professor-Marketing at BITSoM – BITS School of Management
    • Debashish Chatterjee – Director, IIM Kozhikode
    • Rishikesha Krishnan – Director, and Professor of Strategy. IIM Bangalore

    Thereafter, Mr. Anil Sachdev – Founder and Chairman, SOIL Institute of Management, Gurgaon welcomed all the members in his opening address.

    The deliberation started with an Overview of the New Education Policy wherein Prof Chatterjee highlighted the 4 pillars of NEP comprising of Autonomy, Multidisciplinary approach, Research & Technology led innovation and Value based mindset. Dr. Banerjee reemphasised NEPs contribution in terms of encouraging the Multidirectional University, encouraging flexibility and autonomy and focusing on research based on Indian problems. Prof Krishnan iterated that NEP poses more challenges in implementation than philosophical and has paved way for new debates shedding deeply embedded assumptions.

    The debate then moved on to the opportunities that NEP offers to management students in general. Prof Krishnan highlighted that NEP would result in providing bigger exposure to liberal arts, design thinking and promote multidisciplinary approach amongst the students. It would also promote critical thinking, as Prof Krishnan pointed out, making learning an enjoyable experience for students. Faculty members, according to Dr. Banerjee, must encourage small-group interaction and spark interest for this to happen.

    Prof Chatterjee focused on teachers becoming more compassionate, responsive, and encouraging reflection to discuss the role of B Schools in developing leaders. B Schools, according to Dr. Banerjee, play an important role in fostering true empathy, promoting teamwork, and introducing students to leaders from various walks of life. Prof Krishnan agreed with these points, but he spoke about the problem of numbers, which forces B School to become transactional and the challenge of bringing value congruence.

    When asked by the moderator, Dr Vidya Iyer, about the difficulty faced by faculty in engaging students outside of the classroom on the one hand and contributing to research on the other, Dr Banerjee reiterated that an academician’s primary responsibility is to make a difference in people’s lives. Prof Krishnan emphasised the importance of NEP to the accreditation process, indicating that faculty members handle various positions and push the limits of expertise to include all stakeholders and go beyond the researcher.

    Finally, the debate addressed the question of whether Indian education, which has historically emphasised a multidisciplinary tone, had lost its way and needed a policy to correct it. Dr.  Banerjee acknowledged that classifications have become more powerful over time and have become a major impediment to innovation. As a result, promoting curiosity, versatility, and a multidisciplinary approach through the NEP is a good idea. The same view was endorsed by Prof Krishnan.

    Mr. Anil Sachdev concluded the discussion by thanking all the participants for their insightful discussion and emphasising the importance of Curiosity, Experimentation, Design Thinking, Role Modeled Behavior, and Accreditation as major contributors to NEP.
