My Journey at SOIL so far…

The real essence of an organisation lies in its people. It was back in November 2019 when I got in touch with the Admissions’ team at SOIL to pursue my Masters. Understanding my inability to travel due to time constraints and work commitments, I was permitted to undergo the entrance and interview process virtually. Post some intensive research and review, I decided to join the School of Inspired Leadership for its Business Leadership Programme (BLP).

I had heard a lot about the school’s Founder and Chairman, Mr. Anil Sachdev who is recognized globally for his incredible work and extensive experience spanning decades. In addition, what fascinated me about the school was its unique learning design and pedagogy, which focused upon the holistic development of students. Over the next few months, I got in touch with the Dean and Program Chair (Finance) of SOIL, Dr. Neetika Batra, then Career Management Services Head Mr. Sandeep Ranjan, and SOIL Alumni to understand the course, relevance with my profile, and its value proposition. Their warm and welcoming demeanour helped me be at ease, making me comfortable enough to discuss my inhibitions.

The COVID-19 pandemic stuck in the meanwhile and the world came to a standstill. Fortunately for us, if not physically, our program was set in motion virtually on the scheduled date of April 22nd, 2020. It was fascinating to see the whole batch belonging to various parts of the country coalesce digitally and begin its learning journey at SOIL. To say that attending classes in the comforts of our homes was easy, would be partial truth. It was a peculiar concept for most of us as we were trapped in our respective homes trying to gauge how the digital world functioned in the true sense.

It is owing to the management staff and our exceptional faculty who redesigned the curriculum as per the situation and made us feel at par with learning. Needless to say, it would have been equally difficult for them to teach the students in a virtual space. Slowly and steadily, we went with the flow, adapting and absorbing, and learning something new every single day. It surely has been an experience in itself to be able to connect and work with people residing miles away from us, to make friends even without having met any of them, to make use of the Zoom platform not merely to attend classes or sessions, but also for leisure time with a diverse set of people – all of this has been my biggest learning so far.

During this journey, I became a member of the Placement Committee after a tedious selection process. Next in line, I received an opportunity to experience my first ever digital election process, not only as a voter but also as one of the contenders. The love and support I received from the entire batch throughout my campaigning was humbling. The victory margin proved the faith the batch had in me to lead the students’ community as the President of the Students’ Council during these unprecedented times. It also gave me a sense of responsibility going forward to be fair and equitable to all, and give my best to the batch and the school during this era of chaos.

The SOIL journey has truly been a roller-coaster ride for me so far. The ups of learning and friendships blended with the downs of sleepless nights and long working hours go hand-in-hand. After all, isn’t it how life is supposed to be – a mix of calm and chaos?

Quite understandably, the situation at present seems uncertain, but what is certain is the belief that all of us – the school’s faculty, administration, management staff, mentors, students, are in this together and I am hopeful that this too shall pass and soon enough we all will be on campus leading our B-school lives the way we all had planned while preparing ourselves for life under the feathers of SOIL. To conclude, I would like to quote Ken Blanchard’s words which hold great significance today – “None of us is as smart as all of us.”
