Design thinking is a process that helps organizations and individuals create innovative solutions to complex problems. As part of the curriculum at SOIL PGDM, I had the opportunity to learn and apply design thinking in various projects, and it has become an integral part of my approach to problem-solving.

My journey with design thinking began in my first semester when we took a course on innovation and design. The course introduced us to the principles of design thinking, including empathy, experimentation, and iteration. We were also introduced to various tools and techniques such as user research, brainstorming, and prototyping.

One of the most memorable projects in the course was when my team and I were tasked with designing a new product for a local small business which was a clothing store. The major pain point for the store was lack of foot traffic. We began by conducting user research to understand the needs and pain points of the business’s customers, especially to understand why customers were not visiting the store. This involved conducting interviews, surveys, and observing customers in their natural environments.

With a deep understanding of our users, we then moved on to the ideation phase, where we brainstormed a wide range of potential solutions. This was a highly collaborative process, and we were encouraged to think outside the box and challenge assumptions.

The next step was to prototype and test our solutions. We also prototyped and tested different strategies for attracting customers, such as running promotions or hosting events. We built physical and digital prototypes for promotions and community engagement, and then conducted user testing to gather feedback. This was a crucial step, as it allowed us to validate our assumptions and identify areas for improvement.

Throughout the project, we followed the principles of design thinking, which helped us create a solution that was tailored to the specific needs of the business’s customers. The final product was well-received by both the customers and the business owner, and it was a great experience to see the impact of our work.

Since then, I have applied design thinking to various projects at SOIL. It has become an essential tool for me to tackle complex problems and create innovative solutions. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn design thinking and I am excited to continue using it in my future projects.

Design thinking is not just a process that is used in academic projects or by small businesses, it is also widely adopted by successful companies worldwide. Many of these organizations have integrated design thinking into their corporate culture and use it as a key strategy for driving innovation and growth.

IDEO’s design thinking process is focused on understanding users’ needs, prototyping and testing solutions, and iterating based on feedback. This approach has been used to develop new products and services, as well as to improve internal processes and customer experiences.

Another company that has effectively integrated design thinking into its corporate culture is Airbnb. The company has a dedicated design team that uses design thinking to create new features and improve the user experience. Airbnb’s design thinking process is focused on understanding users’ needs, prototyping and testing solutions, and iterating based on feedback.

In conclusion, design thinking is a powerful tool that companies can use to drive innovation and create better products, services and internal processes. Many successful companies, including IDEO, IBM and Airbnb, have integrated design thinking into their corporate culture and used it to create new products, services and improve their internal processes.
