  • How to Make Better Decisions that can impact your Career

Making decisions is difficult, especially when it comes to major career decisions. Choosing a career usually entails a significant amount of vulnerability. It is normal to feel anxious or restless from time to time. It all comes down to making well-informed decisions, and the sooner you begin, the better you’ll be able to succeed.

How to Make Better Decisions that can impact your Career

It’s easy to think of your early career as a time when you were learning about the world and about yourself. But the choices you made during this time can have long-term consequences. Maybe you decided to go into your family business after graduation. Or you found a job that you enjoyed, but it didn’t challenge you.

It’s often difficult to know when to make decisions in your career. You want to avoid making decisions that are too big, too small, or that you might come to regret. But it’s equally important to know when to make decisions that will impact your future job prospects and career trajectory. That’s why it’s so important to surround yourself with smart, like-minded people who can help you to make good decisions

At the end of the day, you’re the one who will have to deal with the end result, so do your best to make the right decision for you.

Let’s take a look at some of the most common career decisions that can impact your path.

    1. Keep your values in mind

In the past few months, we’ve had the opportunity to speak to a number of people about the choices they’ve made in their careers. Some of these people were happy with the decisions they had made, while others weren’t. What we’ve found is that most people are making decisions in their careers that are in line with their values, but they just don’t remember those values when they’re in the thick of making a decision. If you don’t take the time to reflect and remember your values, you’re bound to make decisions that you’ll later regret.

    2. Explore the Options on Your List

This allows you to make an informed decision, which in turn reduces your stress levels. Now that you have narrowed your list of potential careers down to only a few options, it is time to get some basic information about each of the occupations, industries or specializations on your list. This will allow you to get a better understanding of what you are getting yourself into, and it will also provide you with some feedback from our faculty.

    3. Look for opportunities for personal growth

One of the best decisions you can make when you’re starting out is to find internships, live projects and case studies at companies that specialise in your skillset. This means that instead of having to master a bunch of different skills, you’re able to focus on improving one particular area. This is typical of an MBA specialization. This means you’re able to learn a lot about the inner workings of your preferred specialisation. This also means that, when you do apply for jobs outside of your specialty, you’re in a better position to convince an employer that you’re worth investing in.

    4. Don’t follow passion alone

While it is tempting to follow your passion, you should also consider the end impact of the work you are getting into. If the work you are doing now is not providing a return on your time, you should consider changing direction. Dropping classes or putting off starting a company because you are passionate about the idea is a great way to burn out. Instead, follow your passion, but also consider the long-term impact of the work you are getting into. Finding the right fit is critical.

Let these clues guide your passion:

      • Consider the flip side of your weaknesses.
      • Check if you are drawn to any particular subject.
      • If you indulge in a specific hobby or interest, see if that can be transformed into a career choice
    5. Build a strong network

You will have the opportunity to engage and work with a wide variety of people during your MBA program. The type of people you engage with, your peers, seniors, faculty and more, can impact your career. When studying and learning at SOIL, you will be surrounded by people with impressive experiences, great track records, and people with whom you have good chemistry and whom you can see yourself working with for years to come. When you work with the best people, you are more likely to be successful.

It can be difficult to know where to begin when looking for a career or changing careers. You have likely spent months, if not years, researching different paths and searching for opportunities. As exciting as this process is, it can be even more overwhelming when you are faced with the task of narrowing down your options. The first thing you should consider is what truly motivates you. Get past the obvious, such as pay and security, which is easier said than done given the current economic situation.

This may appear to be a lot of work—and it is. However, it is much easier to carve out a career path when you know what you want. Taking these steps early will save you a lot of time and trouble in the long run.
