Organizing Events in the Digital Space

The term ‘digital’ perhaps never gained as much prominence earlier as it did during the COVID-19 crisis. From small-scale to large-scale, when industries worldwide received a severe blow in the way they operated, ‘survival of the fittest’ became the absolute norm. The way of the world transformed carving out a space for human life to adjust, evolve and advance. No wonder, ‘adaptive’ and ‘agile’ are a part of the everyday lingo in the environments we are functioning in today, in addition to our Honourable Prime Minister’s ‘aatmanirbhar’ or self-reliance endorsement.

These unprecedented times truly have made us look at life through a different lens, and reflect upon it like never before.

Digital is dominant, digital is here to stay. Reminiscing the times when events were conducted ‘normally’ in specific venues with special invites, posters and placards, a host of guests, menu planning, and technicalities being taken care of, it is hard to digest that these are now things of the past. Coming to terms with this new system enslaved by the digital space, with complete dependence upon the screen in front is what this new normal has made us all learn. It surely does not deter the spirits of those who believe that the show must go on.

Keeping this thought in mind, the SOIL Institute of Management continues to impart education virtually; giving opportunities and encouraging students in addition, to come forward and showcase their talent in its daily ritual of Morning Circle and a plethora of events and activities conducted throughout the year. The batch of Harmonizers too has adapted to this medium and paved its way by taking initiatives and unleashing its creative streak through dance performances, zumba sessions, singing, drama, fun activities, quizzes, games, among other things. The students have also received opportunities to host special events like the Annual Award Ceremony of SOIL, Freedom from Fears, Independence Day, and Mother as the first Guru; followed by celebrating various festivals all on the digital platform.

Having been a part of many such events both as an organizer and a participant, with lines being blurred by the medium, the experience of both the worlds, so to say, has truly been enriching.

The behind-the-scene chaos, unlike in the physical environment, has been confined to video and telephonic conversations where all the brainstorming, planning, allocating duties, bringing talent on board, and communication with responsibility centres takes place. Different clubs take the onus of bringing something unique to the table by creating and collating content in the form of collages, podcasts and videos. Since SOIL follows Gurudev Standard Time (GST as it is fondly called) in its working, it has been cascaded down to us students as well, and hence, scheduling and sticking to timelines is specially taken care of while organizing events. A day prior to any event, dry runs are conducted on the Zoom platform with all the participants for practicing, synchronizing, monitoring, making last-minute changes if required, and ensuring a smooth procession the following day.

It is baffling yet beguiling to witness how things have remoulded and fallen in place gradually. Even though no technology can replace human touch, yet digitization has connected us in the most incredible way, giving us an opportunity to explore and experiment. As author Andrew Keen rightly puts it, “being human in the digital world is all about building a digital world for humans”.
