Cultivating an entrepreneurial mind set

Cultivating an entrepreneurial mind set and honing an entrepreneurial toolkit helps us excel throughout our professional journey, even if as a future manager and leader, we never desire to start our own venture.

I have found during my first year at the PGDM program at SOIL Institute of Management, that there are an infinite number of ways to spend your time learning – each equally compelling but vastly unique and tailored to various learning styles. One of the most powerful ways of learning is through reflection, including through reflections of others. I am thankful that these sessions were conducted in our college which helped me to grow and improve a lot.

Over the course of the semester, I had a chance to interact with some inspiring and leading entrepreneurs through the sessions conducted by the institute. Everyone who we met was either an experienced founder or mentor who offered their time to coach us all as we are interested in different aspects and dimensions. These sessions have helped me a lot – by opening my mind to new perspectives, changing my way of thinking and so much more. Along with this, I also followed the popular TV show, Shark Tank India, where lot of entrepreneurs came and pitched their ideas. I got to learn a lot about their entrepreneurial journeys, understood the way new ideas are formed and what they have learned through their successes and failures.

Everyone comes from many different walks of life, generations and cultures. But what all of these entrepreneurs had in common is the steep learning curve to success, with many lessons being learned along the way. So the wisdom I learned from some of today’s entrepreneurs is:
1. Accept failure as part of the journey – Accept that failure is par for the course, but accepting and learning from failures is paramount.
2. Keep your eyes open for new opportunities – Many new opportunities are created out of existing problems, so keep your eyes open for career opportunities at all times. We never know when we’ll bump into Oprah!
3. Research and work on your ideas – Every single business model started with one big idea, but to make it a successful one, you have to be sure it is achievable. Good knowledge and understanding of the market around you is key if you strive for success.
4. Never stop creating – Do what you love. Make things. Pursue your hobbies. You don’t always need to have a fixed plan – where it’s going to lead you, or be good at it, just as long as you enjoy the process. Passion is what gets people interested in what you do, and what inspires your team to keep up the hard work.
5. Believe in yourself – Always believe in your own strengths and abilities, no matter what external expectations exist.
6. Develop Patience and determination – We face many challenges and complications in every aspect of our careers. As a professional, we should be firm on our purpose to face every obstacle that presents itself on the road of success. A great business takes time to set up. Being patient and determined are virtues. Work at it and not surrender.
7. Give something back to the world (and reap the financial rewards) – Look for opportunities where you can make a positive change in the world whilst developing a profitable business.
