What happens when creativity meets business innovation?

    Nike Swoosh

In 1971, a design student named Caroline Davidson created the Nike Swoosh logo. She earned just $35 for it. She had no idea her simple design would become a global symbol of athleticism, speed, and movement. Today, the Nike Swoosh is recognized worldwide. It all started with creativity, not strategy or numbers.

In business, we often think of spreadsheets, graphs, and presentations. Most of us imagine professionals crunching data and analyzing figures. The idea of mixing business with art seems strange. But what if success depended on creative thinking? What if innovation came from art and imagination, not just analysis and logic?

This is what you experience in an MBA program offered by a leading B-school. Professors at SOIL Institute of Management asked their students to paint a mural without using calculators or data models. Instead, they used paintbrushes and blank paper. At first, it felt odd. What does painting have to do with business? But as they worked together, something clicked. This wasn’t just an art activity. It was about solving problems differently.

    MBA Program

They brainstormed ideas, tried new things, and created something meaningful. The process wasn’t about perfect art. It was about teamwork, creativity, collaboration and improving each other’s ideas, and and how trial and error leads to better results. These skills as well as this experience can not be achieved solely by lectures.

Creative activities like this help students develop important business skills. Businesses today don’t just want experts in numbers. They want leaders who think differently. They want people who see new connections and create fresh solutions. Creativity is a key skill for solving complex problems.

    quote

As I worked on the mural, I saw different skills come together. Some classmates excelled in drawing and design. Others brought energy through music and storytelling. Each skill added something unique. Together, we made something better than we could have done alone.

~ Rohit Yadav, PGDM, Class of 2026, SOIL

This is how businesses thrive. Successful companies aren’t built by one type of person. They need diverse teams with different skills. Diversity of thought leads to innovation. Creative teams bring ideas to life.

In the past, business schools focused on numbers and strategy. These skills are still important. But they aren’t enough anymore. Companies need more than spreadsheets and reports. They need leaders who combine strategy with creativity.

    quote

Like many, I once saw Steve Jobs as a tech genius. But his success came from merging art with technology. Jobs often said creativity shaped Apple’s success. He credited a college calligraphy class with inspiring Apple’s design focus. That class taught him about typography, which influenced Apple’s clean, elegant design. As I sketched during our workshop, I understood what Jobs meant. Creativity isn’t about making something pretty. It’s about solving problems in new ways. It’s about seeing possibilities others miss. Creative thinking opens doors to innovation.

~ Shatakshi Singh, PGDM, Class of 2026, SOIL

Businesses need this kind of thinking. In today’s fast-paced world, they can’t stick to old methods. They must keep innovating to stay competitive. This applies to every field-marketing, product design, even management.

In marketing, it’s not enough to run traditional ad campaigns. Marketers must tell stories that connect with people. They must create memorable experiences and explore new ideas. Successful marketing combines data with creativity. Product design also benefits from creative thinking. Great products don’t just work well; they’re beautifully designed. They solve problems in simple and elegant ways. This happens through collaboration between designers, engineers, and strategists. It requires a culture that values creativity.

Even leadership needs creativity. Good leaders don’t just manage resources. They inspire teams and create strong cultures. They communicate their vision through stories. They embrace change and look for new ways to grow. This workshop changed how creativity is perceived. It’s not just for artists or designers. It’s for anyone who wants to think differently. Creativity helps us adapt and innovate. It makes us better problem-solvers and more effective leaders.

Businesses that embrace creativity will thrive. They’ll discover new ideas and find unique solutions. Creativity helps turn a simple idea into something big. It’s what made the Nike Swoosh a global icon. It’s what shaped Apple’s success.

So, if you feel stuck in a routine of spreadsheets and reports, step back. Pick up a pen or a paintbrush. Try something new.

Enrol in SOIL’s PGDM program and let yourself think differently!

Watch how creativity instilled at SOIL fuels business strategy.

Understand: Business isn’t just about numbers and strategies. It’s about people and ideas. It’s about the magic that happens when creativity and business come together. Creativity isn’t optional anymore. It’s the key to unlocking new possibilities.
