Adapting to Digital Learning

Having completed almost forty days as an MBA student at SOIL, I can safely say that it’s been an exciting and challenging journey. The experience has been excellent on the learning front. But I felt that I struggled a bit in the initial days to adapt to the practice of digital learning. Though the pandemic and work from the home culture before my MBA admission at SOIL had given me a taste of the digital experience, the whole new virtual world of learning was a different ballgame.

Since the PGPM program at SOIL is a one-year MBA and all the ingredients of a traditional two year MBA are jam-packed into it, the number of classes, assignments, and group activities have been increasing gradually. Similarly, the time we spent in front of the laptop screen summed up with time. In the beginning, I wasn’t entirely comfortable and was missing the campus learning for my post-graduation. Indeed, at one moment, I felt that I should have joined my postgrad next year.

However, I am fortunate to learn about the heart and soul of leadership at SOIL every week. It has given me deep insights into becoming a great leader. I believe I have already begun my transformational journey as I’ve adapted to digital learning. ‘Adaptability’ – adapting to new environments and psychological changes is crucial to becoming a great leader. When I heard and understood the significance of adaptability during my leadership sessions, I pondered its crux deeply. When I reflected on it in my evenings, I profoundly understood that I should be sensitive to changes and streamline my energy to reshape how I respond to transformations.

Slowly, I started to embrace the new normal of virtual learning and eventually, in a short period of time, I have started liking it. Though there is the absence of face-to-face interactions, hostel life, and group discussions on campus, there are several positives. For instance, I feel it saves time to some extent as there is no daily commute to deal with. Alongside this, it’s a privilege to go through the recordings of the sessions the next day in case I miss out on some key points. The recordings are a boon to me as it’s an excellent source for revision. Additionally, SOIL has divided the PGPM batch into two sections for less confusion, more attention to individual students, and increased learning outputs. It’s been a smooth journey so far, and there is no doubt that it will remain the same throughout the one-year journey.

Another mind-blowing experience at SOIL was the mentoring session. I am not sure how many B-schools have a tradition of mentoring sessions in such a manner. I am highly blessed to have both internal and external mentors by my side to accelerate my career growth and enhance the route to my goals. The online mentoring sessions are meticulously planned and executed. From being a person who was worried about digital learning to having developed fondness for the online mode, I feel the transformation in myself!

With that said, I have a strong belief that I would adapt easily yet again when there is a shift to the offline mode of learning as soon as things settle. I am so happy to have had this confidence instilled in me within just a month since I joined SOIL. If one month could transform me this much, I am looking forward to seeing myself as a wholly transformed leader in another eleven months.
