How To Choose Your B school

Planning and studying for a Masters program needs an enormous investment of your time, cash and energy, therefore it’s crucial to make sure the selection of program and college meets your expectations and requirements. Before making your final selection, you should visit the campus to get clarity on campus culture and atmosphere and to visualize whether or not you’d fit in. Talk with students, professors and alumni and try to understand whether this college will help you to achieve your career goal.

Having said that, it is really important to choose the right college to help you to shape your career. We believe choosing the right B school is important as it not only paves the way for a great career, but it also shapes one’s personality, builds values and principles in a person and all these contribute to a successful life. Following guidelines will enable to choose the correct business school:

Faculty: Good faculty is key to quality education, and with continuous support from them students can bring out the best in themselves. It is advisable to ensure the college has distinguished, full-time, experienced faculty. Look for the student-faculty ratio, the profile of visiting faculty and the people coming to take guest lectures, as faculty plays a very important role in shaping one’s career.

Industry Linkage: Industry linkage is an important element in selecting your management college. It will give you an opportunity to experience practical knowledge. A college with better industry linkage also gives an indication of how well the college and its program is accepted in the market.

Student experience: The campus experience becomes very critical particularly when you are going to stay in the campus for 12 to 24 months (depending upon your choice of program). And, nobody can give you better information than current students or alumni of the college. For the social media savvy generation, it is not a difficult task to connect with them. Ask them about their experiences, culture on campus, diversity among student profiles and the batch size. For some students management education would be an entirely new field of study, so it is important to have information about the batch size and diversity of student profiles in the class. In a small batch you may not have many opportunities of peer to peer learning.

Student success: I believe it is not right to judge the performance of any college based on their placement records only. Placement records should be considered, but to evaluate the college better, we should also consider the student achievements and accomplishments. This is because the success of students defines the acceptance of college in the market and how competent their students are compared to industry competition. To measure this, I would recommend taking a sample size of 10 students and try to understand their career graphs in the last 3 years. You can focus on where they started and where they are right now. Learning Format: Every college follows unique and different learning styles such as lectures, case-studies, Interaction with industry leaders, field programs, Live projects, internships and so on. Traditional colleges generally rely on classroom learning, case studies and one or two industry projects. However, there are few colleges which have adopted unique styles such as learning through theatre, Yoga, social innovation and whole system thinking Bootcamps. Students need to find out which learning model is most suitable for them.

Location: This is also important because the city you are in teaches you a lot. For example, if you are based in a tech-savvy city then you will become aware of many things related to technology. The location also matters in the classroom as most B-schools are dependent upon industry experts for real-time learning. It would be difficult for any college which is not located in a good city to bring industry experts to the students. The location also makes a difference in placements as many companies prefer to hire resources locally rather than to travel to other cities.
