Justine Hardy, the founder of Healing Minds Foundation which helps in rehabilitating those suffering from the psychological fallout of conflict, has done majority of her work in the Kashmir region over the years. She recently visited SOIL campus for a delightful session with the students. Read further to get a quick understanding of how this session helped their perspective towards stress, as articulated by a student.

The guest lecture with Justine Hardy was quite an awakening one. It gave us a different perspective of looking at mental stress. Full credits to the prolific personality who took us to have a different experience in just an hour.

Justine Hardy, our guest lecturer who counsels people suffering from the so-called disease, mental anxiety in the Kashmir valley, an apparently tough demography with numerous political and geographical complications. And that’s the last time we call Anxiety a ‘disease’.

Anxiety – A human trait

The major emphasis of the session was on equipping us with a different instrument to handle anxiety, the adrenaline rush or whatever you call it.

Anxiety isn’t first of all a disease, it’s something which we as human beings deal with day in and day out. We come across it quite often like, whenever we have an exam, give a presentation, or undergo any task which is out of our comfort zone. Anxiety isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a part of the human evolution process. It’s not something which one should think to get rid of, rather it’s a human trait. We just need to learn ways to use it positively.

The measures to deal with Anxiety were through simple mechanisms like, observing your breath. Breathing normally not only brings us to the present but also stops us from worrying about the things which were disappointing for us.

Mental Health

Mental health isn’t absence of stress, tension, anxiety, it’s the art of learning to live with it comfortably and making cautious efforts to bring them down as and when they occur to us.

We also were educated of the five pillars of mental health:
- Good sleep
- Proper Nutrition
- Adequate Hydration
- Regular exercise
- Mindfulness
So, the driver of human life, is the Human tension, without which Life becomes synonymous to a bridge without a support. One always has a choice at any given moment for their next course of action. Decide it by holding yourself responsible for what has happened.
