Embarking on an industry career implies stepping into a profit-driven realm, different from the academic focus on theoretical research and concept exploration. This shift poses a challenge for fresh graduates. Despite their expertise, transitioning to the private sector might seem daunting, as the business environment presents a unique set of considerations. It’s akin to navigating an unfamiliar landscape despite one’s proficiency. Being unable to cope with the newness and tech disruptions, factors such as layoffs, the rise of hybrid work models, and the prevailing talent shortage contribute to a growing sense of disconnection among workers. This is a pertinent challenge for businesses, irrespective of their size, as employee engagement remains a linchpin for fostering productivity, encouraging innovation, and ensuring staff retention.

Recent data, as outlined in a report by Glint, highlights a concerning trend of declining employee engagement in several countries. In the United States, employee engagement has plummeted to a historic low, standing at a mere 34%. Similarly, in the United Kingdom, it hovers at 39%, while in Australia, it is marginally higher at 41%.

The report highlights a substantial disparity between the expectations of employees and the experiences provided by employers. The significance of fostering a robust sense of connection among colleagues is emphasized by a staggering 85% of employees. However, only 52% of the workforce reports actually feeling connected to their co-workers. This incongruence between expectation and reality highlights the pressing need for organizations to address the growing disconnection among their employees.

We started with a few subjects that were very new to me, helped me develop interpersonal skills, and gave me direction as to what I should pursue going forward. So, in the 2nd month itself, I was certain that I wanted to pursue the one-year MBA in HR! Its innovative curriculum provides its students with a holistic view of people skills and people management, talent acquisition, and different aspects of Human Resources, which has been extremely helpful in understanding the industry. SOIL also provided me the opportunity to do 3 internships that gave me vast industry experience having worked on live projects. My first internship was with Teach For India, an NGO that, as the name suggests, helps underprivileged students get an education, changing my perspective in its entirety, on how the world functions. It was life-changing!

I developed an interest in the education industry during this internship and got placed at a company called Stoa in the same sector. I realized that all that I had learned in the first 7 months at SOIL was actually being applied in real life, which gave me an edge over the others doing my kind of work. Initially, I had only read and heard about SOIL having an industry-relevant curriculum, but today, having been through the entire program, I can say that those weren’t baseless claims, but facts, and enrolling in the program was the best decision of my life!
