Why Not a Career in Analytics?

Today, most organisations are looking towards digitalisation, and analytics happens to be an important accelerator in this growth. MNCs these days are looking for employees who are not only business oriented but they have a sound understanding of how the business can be boosted using technology. Business Intelligence, Data Mining, Predictive Analytics and Prescriptive Analytics are playing a pivotal role in leveraging the business world and helping organisations make better decisions.

I, being a student of the Analytics batch of SOIL Institute of Management can actually figure out the beauty of these subjects in the world of business. Every day, I get to learn and understand how we can statistically prove various functionalities, especially when it comes to Sales and Marketing, Finance and Supply Chain. Interestingly, these days HR analytics is also in huge demand. Gone are those days when Resume is shortlisted manually- “Everything is AI based”, it’s the machine which decides whether you are eligible to go to the next round or not. I can see this transformation happening so quickly in the digital world. If this is the case, I believe we must give a thought to take a step and upgrade ourselves because if we do not push ourselves now, we may have to stand behind later.

SOIL has been consistently innovative in terms of its curriculum where every year, subjects are designed thoughtfully based upon industry needs. Currently, we have learnt amazing and relevant subjects like Data Mining using R, Predictive Analytics, the fundamentals of Python and many more. Every subject was started from scratch where even if we had no idea of what the subject was all about, the faculty will make sure that we go back with learning something new. Also, we have the Analytics Club where the club head and club members make sure that they share their learnings on key trends of the analytics world.

From my experiential learning POV in SOIL, I can definitely say one thing that when it comes to placement, the panel looks at your analytical thinking and approach to solving a problem. It is not always that you need to give the correct answer, rather they look for how differently can you think about a solution, no matter what your answer is. So, this approach of thinking and learning cannot happen in silos. It has to happen from practical classroom learnings, assignments and group projects. I would say that my 6 months exposure in SOIL has been just like an upward trendline where every new day, I got to learn a new model or framework and I could now think of implementing a business idea using the concepts of Analytics.
