7 Major Skills You Need before joining MBA

Many students hold the false belief that they will learn everything they need to thrive in their careers during their MBA program. However, it has been discovered that top B-school graduates who plan ahead are more prepared and employable than their peers at campus.

I’ll discuss several hard and soft skills that every MBA candidate needs to have in order to benefit the most from the MBA program in this highly competitive world. I’ll be considering my individual experiences as a SOIL MBA student.

1. Developing Business Acumen

You get a 360° view of an organization when you solve business cases encompassing revenue problems and creation of go-to-market strategy. The issues might lie in marketing, and supply chain. Therefore, analyzing business cases involving business growth greatly aids in developing business acumen.

2. Understand platform models

The majority of companies today that employ MBA graduates are not in the FMCG or automotive industries. Top employers that hire today are platform based. Zomato and Nykaa are two examples. For this reason, to land a job, having a solid grasp of the platform model is essential.

3. Build basic knowledge about Web 3.0

Emerging technologies are getting adopted by all businesses across industries. Few of these emerging technologies are:
- Internet of Things
- Artificial Intelligence
- BlockChain
Knowledge of the applications of these advanced technologies can immensely help to advance one’s career.

4. Excel at Microsoft Excel

The Excel way of life. Excel classes are offered as part of the curriculum at some B-schools, including SOIL. But, being at ease with VLookup, Pivots, and Modeling is an added advantage. This can assist you avoid wasting time on campus learning the fundamentals while your peers are turning in assignments and finishing ahead of schedule.

5. Working in teams

Peer-to-peer learning and assignments are central to the MBA. Being a lone warrior on the MBA campus is challenging. You will learn the EQ necessary to work with new, diverse people by participating in teams. Therefore, try to develop your team-building skills.

6. Have Good Work Ethic

There are many free riders on campus. Avoid being one. This will benefit you on campus as well as in terms of developing a network of contacts that you can work with in the future. Because opportunities come your way as a result of your reputation over time.

7. Crisp Communication

Prior to enrolling in an MBA school, work on your communication skills so you can express yourself effectively. If possible, aim to work in front-end positions before pursuing an MBA. Your negotiation and communication abilities improve as a result. It will put you ahead of the competition and aid in your employment.

Last but not least, I’ve always believed that an MBA program is an accelerator rather than a magic wand. Degrees are just as valuable as you make them.
