Whether in your career or life, having a mentor is crucial to all of our continued growth and development.<\/p>\n<h6>What is a mentor?<\/h6>\n<p>A mentor is someone who helps you grow your skills, make better decisions, and gain new perspectives on your life and career. As a mentee, your mentor will leverage their experience to give you guidance on your career or life now and in the future. <\/p>\n<p>Rather than learning through trial and error, a mentor is a person you can look to for direction and a role model to imitate. <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a mentee, you may feel like you have to open up about all your challenges and failures. The point is, <strong>mentorship can feel intimidating<\/strong>. But it doesn\u2019t have to feel that way. In a mentoring relationship, both the mentee and the mentors stand to experience a myriad of benefits.<\/p>\n<h6>Benefits of being a mentor<\/h6>\n<p>Being a mentor serves as a way to give back and is an important development and learning experience. Teaching others is the best way to learn yourself. In the same way, mentors become more competent as leaders and communicators as they guide and help rising talent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-0\"><strong>Validate the mentor\u2019s leadership skills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Being put in the position of a role model can help mentors become better leaders and instill confidence in their leadership ability. The responsibility of helping guide someone\u2019s career and goals requires the senior employee to teach, motivate and offer honest feedback in difficult conversations. All these skills are at the top of the required list for a leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-0\"><strong>Become recognized as an advisor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Similar to developing leadership skills, mentors will become recognized for their communication skills and the ability to help young employees with their career advancement and personal development. Mentors will become known as advisors that are open to helping others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-0\"><strong>Learn to clearly communicate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Albert Einstein once said that \u201cif you can&#8217;t explain it to a six-year-old, you don&#8217;t understand it yourself.\u201d Likewise, if you\u2019ve ever had to explain something to somebody, you probably noticed that you had to think it through and clean up your explanation to make it easy for another person to understand. Mentors will become better communicators and listeners by virtue of being in a mentoring relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-0\"><strong>Gaining new perspectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the mentor is usually in the position of imparting knowledge to the mentee, a mentoring relationship can also help the more experienced student to learn new skills. It\u2019s common that younger professional can take on the role of mentor through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.togetherplatform.com\/blog\/reverse-mentoring-the-future-of-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reverse mentoring model<\/a> to share technological advances, trends, or sharpen their digital skills. This is an area where the mentee can also become a teacher, guiding the mentor to learn new skills or a new way of doing things.<\/p>\n<p>We at SOIL strongly encourage our alumni to mentor current students and their juniors.<\/p>\n<h6>Benefit of mentorship to a mentee<\/h6>\n<p>There are a lot of benefits to being mentored by someone more experienced and senior than you. Rather than learning from your own experience alone, a mentor can accelerate your learning and development by his experience and guidance and give path and vision <\/p>\n<p class=\"p-0\"><strong>Learn corporate culture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the advantages of having a mentor in college is that they can help you adapt to corporate culture more quickly. Students who are involved in a mentorship program are more aware of themselves and their career objectives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-0\"><strong>Enhancing skills <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most mentees are looking for someone to help them advance their career prospects. Through advice and guidance, the mentor can help in the development of their full potential or entrepreneurial mindset in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-0\"><strong>Networking opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At college, the mentoring program is a great way for new learners to expand their network. For many new learners, it can take months to get to know everyone. Through a mentoring program, a mentee can gain access to important career contacts sooner. And build their network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-0\"><strong>Problem-solving<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A mentor can be the person who can help to solve whatever issues a mentee might have.  When I entered college, I was afraid about how I would manage studies or how will I prepare myself to get my dream job after completing my MBA. I also had self-doubts, but after meeting with my internal mentor, Md. Salman, Head of Career Management Services at SOIL, I was slowly able to sort out most of my problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-0\"><strong>Transfer of knowledge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our institute has experienced mentors who have thorough knowledge of the corporate world, as well as the programs of training and mentoring that a mentee can access to help them reach their goals. The mentor can impart wisdom developed on the job over time, information and workplace expectations that will help the mentee succeed in the long run.
