The Future of Capitalism, a course by SOIL in association with Shizenkan University Japan and IESE Business School, Spain

SOIL Institute of Management, together with Shizenkan University and IESE Business School, launched a joint MBA elective course entitled: The Future of Capitalism, in January this year.

In addition to SOIL, Shizenkan and IESE, the course was further taught in collaboration with FGV in Brazil. Students from the four schools connected virtually to discuss different aspects of today’s capitalist and socio-economic systems & the issues faced. The class had an impressive list of guest speakers. In addition, several business leaders like Paul Polman (former CEO of Unilever); Tak Niinami (CEO of Suntory Holdings); B. Muthuraman (former CEO and Vice Chairman of Tata Steel) and James Higa (former senior executive of Apple closely worked with Steve Jobs for decades) showed strong interest to help this platform grow.

On behalf of our four Academic Directors – Dr. Tomo Noda, Founder, Shizenkan University, Dr. Franz Kamp, Dean IESE, Dr. Edson Kenji Kondo, Dean, FGV and Sh. Anil Sachdev, Chairman, SOIL, we thank the participants for making this a grand success!

Our Vision is to make this a global movement in three years with 300 students from 30 MBA schools from all over the world taking this course every year.

It was fascinating to hear the discussion of visionary leaders like Nitin Nohria, Paul Polman, Mr. Muthuraman, John Elkington, and many others, in the innovative course, “Future of Capitalism”.

The thought provoking course was hosted in a unique manner by SOIL along with its global partners like IESE, Shizenkan & FGV Brazil.

It was heartening to know what Harvard was discussing a decade back, by way of curriculum based on “Knowing, Doing & Being” courses, and now of embedding values, liberal arts in management, is what SOIL incorporated and practiced for many years since its inception, through an interesting mix of simulations, field immersions, mentoring etc.

Nitin rightly pointed out that while the “Being” part is in place with most students, the gap between “Knowing” and “Doing” is what B Schools must find ways to fill.

Paul pointed out as to how B school rankings must be based on more meaningful parameters like ESG impact, rather than salaries!

And how self-worth is so much more important than net worth!

John reiterated the importance of triple bottom line and ways to achieve that.

Mr. Muthuraman rightly reminded us all that education is the most powerful tool in redesigning capitalism.

Certainly a rich discussion with some great insights!!”
